Profile Information

About Me:
I am a 29 year old Christ follower, a wife of over 11 years to the most wonderful man in the world and mother to 3 beautiful children.
How Long have you homeschooled?
We are on our second year.
What ages are your children?
We have a 6 year old boy who is in the first grade. A four year old boy who wants nothing to do with school type play. A 2 year old girl who can count to 10 and sing her alphabet like nobody's business!
What Homeschool theory do you ascribe to?
I think we mostly want to teach our children first of all to have the character that would please Jesus, we teach Saxon math and phonics and a bible curriculum.
What is your primary goal in Homeschooling your kids?
To give them an education that exceeds most public schools while allowing them to remain children and in the family unit as long as possible
What is your greatest challenge with Homeschooling?
I just am not sure about our curriculum right now...

Hi! We didn't begin homeschooling until my oldest was in 4th and my middle child was in 2nd. This fall, the "baby" will start Kindergarten, and I'm in the same boat as you - looking for something that will work.

My two older kids used the "Shurley" program at the private school they attended, and it worked well for them. It is a little pricey, so I'm not sure if I'll order it for my youngest or not.

I LOVE WinterPromise. Check out their website and request a catalog- www.winterpromise.com. Your kiddos might really be interested in their Animals and Their Worlds science-based program. It's for preK to 2nd grade. While I haven't personally used that particular program- I've heard wonderful, wonderful things about it.

Welcome!
I'm sorry I can't help with the phonics. I know some really like Explode the Code.
Last year we used Sonlight curriculum for schooling and this year we used a combination of Sonlight and WinterPromise. And next year I plan on totally using WinterPromise although I am looking into Queen Homeschool's Language Lessons for my then to be 3rd grade daughter who is struggling some with her language arts.

I am really interested in what other families with first grade boys are using for phonics. We use Saxon which has so many rules to learn our boy knows the rules but is really struggling to read. He can sound anything out but it is a really slow process and I think we might need to make some changes before he gets behind.
We are starting kindergarten with our soon to be 5 year old in the fall and don't want the same issues with him.
If you can offer up some phonics advice I would love it!
